    INTRODUCTION

Abraham Lincoln believed that The Declaration of Independence defined the goals toward which the new country should strive. In a speech on June 26, 1857 at Springfield, Illinois Lincoln said, referring to the founders of the Declaration:

"They meant to set up a standard maxim for a free society, which should be familiar to all, and revered by all; constantly looked to, constantly labored for, and even though never perfectly attained, constantly approximated, and thereby constantly spreading and deepening its influence, and augmenting the happiness and value of life to all people of all colors everywhere."

While Lincoln was speaking specifically to the problem of slavery in that speech, this quotation is broad and applies to the entire Declaration in all of its parts.

Acknowledge God, America! is a movement in keeping with the principle stated by Abraham Lincoln. The Declaration acknowledges God, the Constitution does not. An Amendment is necessary to bring the Constitution into conformity with the Declaration.
